Oil on Canvas $10.99 Japan: Mick Karn (vocals, clarinet, saxophone, bass); David Sylvian (vocals, keyboards); Masami Tsuchiya (guitar, keyboards); Richard Barbieri (keyboards); Steve Jansen (drums, marimba).Recorded at The Hammersmith Odeon, London in November, 1982.This was Japan’s last album, a live set that serves as an overview of their work as a group. It also includes performances of songs that were not featured on the group’s studio albums. In retrospect, it’s an ironic twist of fate that Japan was just blossoming into its most artistically fruitful period while on the verge of breaking up. When this 1982 concert was recorded at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, Japan was just around the corner from disintegration. OIL ON CANVAS makes a hell of a swan song. The band had come a long way from it’s glam-rock beginnings, evolving into a subtle, complex unit that combined post-punk funk, electronics, Asian imagery and an unbridled experimental streak for some of the early-’80s most memorable recordings. Incredibly, this live album reveals that the complicated textures and fragile dynamics of Japan’s studio work transferred easily to the stage. David Sylvian’s velvety baritone, Mick Karn’s jazzy fretless bass, and Richard Barbieri’s exotic, atmospheric synthesizers make these tunes from the band’s final phase as rewarding as they are inscrutable. |

Black Hole/Blank Canvas [Import] $20.99 Continuing their nearly unbroken string of unclassifiably terrific albums, Norwegian trio Motorpsycho deliver one of their finest with the epic Black Hole/Blank Canvas. A two-disc, 17-track set, Black Hole/Blank Canvas leans more to the group’s drony psychedelic side than its heavier acid rock sound, with a stronger than usual overlay of sweetly melodic pop hooks to go along with all the pleasurably noisy guitars. The most accurate musical comparison is mid-’90s Yo La Tengo (circa Painful and Electr-O-Pura), although the band’s fondness for ’70s hard rock crops up from time to time as well. Most notably, the closing “With Trixeene Through the Mirror/Dream with Open Eyes” blends falsetto vocals and big guitar riffs in the tradition of vintage Boston or Blue ?yster Cult. Just about the only misstep is the epic “Before the Flood,” which gets docked for its peculiarly off-key vocals, which sound oddly like they were sung by Screech from Saved by the Bell. Otherwise, Black Hole/Blank Canvas may well be Motorpsycho’s best album yet, or at least their strongest since 2002’s It’s a Love Cult. ~ Stewart Mason |

Canvas – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Dolby $12.99 Mental illness stretches a loving family to the breaking point in this independent drama. Chris Marino (Devon Gearhart) is a ten-year-old boy growing up in a small oceanside community in Florida. Chris’s father John (Joe Pantoliano) is a construction worker who is struggling to hold the family together under difficult circumstances — his wife and Chris’ mother, Mary (Marcia Gay Harden), has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and while they’ve been pursuing a variety of treatment options, Mary’s condition continues to slowly deteriorate as she hears phantom sounds, has hallucinations, and becomes increasingly paranoid. While Joe tries to explain Mary’s disease to Chris, her actions have turned her into an increasingly frightening and embarrassing stranger to her son, and Mary is clearly aware of the toll her condition has taken on the family but cannot help herself. After a violent incident results in a call from the police, Mary enters a mental hospital, and as Joe begins to buckle under the pressure of his circumstances, he quits his job and devotes all his spare time to building a sailboat, a project that reminds him of better days for Mary and himself. Canvas was the first feature film from writer and director Joseph Greco, who drew inspiration from the story of his mother, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was growing up. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |
