Signing paintings…..?
I know this might sound like a silly question, but I’m just wondering how you normally sign oil and acrylic paintings; paint in your signature, with an ink pen once its dried, or something else?
I know, I told you it’s kinda silly, but I’m really curious.
The general rule of thumb these days seems to be that an artist painting a figurative or more realistic painting signs the painting on the front in the more traditional style. Abstract artists painting large, non-representational works tend not to sign the front of the canvas but they do sign the back of it.
How an artist chooses to sign their work is really a matter of preference. Some use the same type of paint they are creating the work with. Others use markers and many use simply a pencil when signing the back of the canvas. There are no ‘wrong’ ways to do it, unless you’re the major ego type who just has to sign it with a huge image distracting signature.
Personally, I sign all my work and sign them with paint. What I do though is incorporate the signature into the painting so that’s it’s not so obvious and distracting.
Look in the lower left hand corner of this painting and you’ll see the signature painted into the stand holding the potted plant.
